How to reduce risk of water damage in your home
Water detection systems
A water detection system may help educe damage from slow leaks that often go undected until it is too late and significant damage has been done.
There are two types of water leak detection systems: passive and active.
- Passive leak detection systems are intended to alert you of a leak. An audible alarm sounds.
Passive systmes can either be battery operated or stand-alone units. They are inexpensive and easy to install. They can either sit on the floor or be wall mounted. The moisture detector is located on the floor and activates the alarm when it becomes wet. Keep one detector by your refrigerator, dishwasher and toilet. - Acitve leak detection systems generate an alarm and also attempt to stop the leak. They generally have a shut-off valve. For example, if your washer is leaking, it will sound an alarm and shut-off the water supply to the washer only. Cost is about $70 - $150. A whole house system costs about $500 to $1,600, sends an alarm when a leak is detected and automatically shuts off the main water service. Some models can be integrated with your security system.
