Protect yourself from lightning
Did you know that each year lightning causes more deaths and destruction than floods, hurricanes and tornadoes combined?
Here is how to protect yourself when lightning is present:
- do not use the telephone except in emergencies
- stay away from electrical appliances, TVs, fireplace, metal objects, windows and doors
- don't take a shower or bath during a storm
- if outside seek shelter in an enclosed building or vehicle or find a low-lying area
- if outside and shelter is not available, crouch down with feet together and hands on knees
- avoid open vehicles such as golf carts, riding lawnmowers, farm tactors
- avoid isolated trees, high ground, large bodies of water and open fields
- stay away from natural lightning rods such as golf clubs, tractors, bikes or fishing rods
- if boating, go to land immediately
